During my recent visit to Wisdom of Equus near Wrexham, I was eager to learn more about their unique approach to mental health and personal development. As I stepped onto their peaceful grounds, I was immediately captivated by the calming atmosphere—spaces designed for reflection, learning, and connection with nature. The founder, Dawn, warmly welcomed me and explained their mission: to facilitate personal growth, education, and positive mental health through equine therapy. What I didn’t expect was...
...how profoundly the experience would affect me personally; I left feeling refreshed, grounded, and almost as if I had experienced a form of therapy myself.

Wisdom of Equus works closely with a wide range of community organisations, including local councils, social services, schools, NHS, and mental health charities, to support those who are most in need. Their programmes are tailored to help individuals overcome issues such as low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, grief, PTSD, and stress. The beauty of their approach lies in the connection between humans and horses—a bond that is both spiritual and scientific. Dawn explained how horses can serve as mirrors, helping people learn about their own communication and build confidence by leading or caring for the animals. For example, leading a horse like Lexi, who is particularly tuned into such activities, can teach individuals about leadership, trust, and self-awareness.

The environment they’ve created is truly special. It’s a space that encourages healing and growth, with dedicated areas for learning, outdoor spaces with strawberries, blackberries, and apple trees, and even a fire pit for reflection or group activities. These natural elements add a sense of vitality and hope, symbolising growth and renewal. During my visit, I had the opportunity to feed a horse named Tilly some chamomile plants, which smelled citrusy and calming—a simple yet powerful reminder of how nature can soothe and support us. Dawn shared stories of children and adults who have faced traumatic experiences and how their programmes help them reconnect with themselves and build confidence through interactions with the horses.

What amazed me was how these activities foster a sense of calm and mindfulness. Observing the horses’ reactions and responses can help individuals overcome fears and anxieties, while caring for them teaches patience and self-compassion. The organisation is continually evolving, with new features and outdoor spaces in development, all aimed at enhancing the healing experience. My visit left me feeling more connected to nature and more aware of the incredible potential for equine therapy to transform lives. Wisdom of Equus exemplifies how harnessing the natural bond between humans and animals, combined with thoughtful environments, can promote resilience, confidence, and emotional well-being in a truly holistic way.
