Option 1
Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA)
Ref: CDCAV001
What is the course?
The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) has replaced two previous assessing qualifications: the A1 and A2. This is the qualification you need if you want to become an NVQ assessor – or any other sort of educational assessor.
We offer this course in the classroom or as distance learning, so you can learn in a way that suits you!
Who is it for?
The course is perfect for learners who have already begun or are looking to begin a career in assessing. You’ll gain an understanding of the principles and practice of assessment, learn how to effectively assess learners’ occupational competence and make sound assessment decisions. We will ensure you are fully prepared for your role as an assessor.
Interested in teaching as well? Combine this course with the Level 3 Award in Education and Training and save over £100.
What do I need if I want to do this course?
It’s important that you’re occupationally competent in the area you’d like to assess, which means that if you want to assess retail NVQs, you’ll need to have worked in retail within the last 10 years. You also need to be already working with at least one learner because we will need to observe you in the workplace with them.
We can give you advice and guidance if you’re not sure about either of these elements and, if you are able to travel to Worcester or Birmingham, we may be able to provide learners for you.
Please speak to us before signing up if you need help finding learners to work with.
How much time will it take?
Classroom option: we will meet for four full days in the classroom then we will observe you in the workplace on two or more occasions. Observations should take no more than an hour on each occasion.
The classroom sessions can take place in a variety of ways: four days back to back; over the course of two weekends; once a week for 4 weeks… speak to us about your requirements.
Distance learning: you'll have a workbook and assessment pack and you can work through at your own pace. The whole course should take around 30 hours.
You will have 9 months to complete your coursework.
Are there any exams?
No. Your work isn’t graded either: you either pass or you are referred, which means you have an opportunity to resubmit your work. We will of course give you as much support as you need to pass! Your work will be assessed by your tutor.
Who is my tutor?
The tutor worked in senior management at a charity for nine years, qualified with the Diploma To Teach In The Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) in 2011 and has been writing, assessing and delivering training for a variety of delegates for over ten years. She has worked in a mainstream school, has lots of experience in Alternative Education and now runs a Training Provider with her business partner.

Option 3
Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA)
Ref: CDCAV003
This replaces the old A1 course and is intended for individuals that need to carry out assessments in the classroom or work environment. It consists of two classroom days and a third day where your tutor will observe you in your current assessing role.
Candidates are awarded a nationally accredited qualification by its conclusion, enabling assessments to be carried out on site, within colleges and on NVQ programmes.
What’s involved?
The course consists of two classroom days covering the theoretical elements of the course and one observational visit.
The entire theoretical unit is completed in the classroom days, and your
teacher will set you up to make the rest of the course as straightforward as possible.
The practical element requires learners to carry out four assessments on two different employees in their workplace. Learners complete a portfolio of the assessment plans, evidence and feedback.
Who’s it for?
The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) is for people that want the qualification to assess in the classroom or work environment. This includes the following sectors:
Early Years
Health & Social Care
College & Schools
Hairdressing & Beauty
What will I learn?
On successful completion of the course learners will understand the different types of assessment and how effective assessing is vital in guiding candidates through the learning pathway.
Candidates will gain the skills and knowledge to evaluate practitioners carrying out assessments in the classroom and work environment.
What you get out of it
On completion of the course you will gain a nationally recognised assessing certificate, with the flexibility to assess in both the work and classroom environments.
The aim of the course is to give candidates the skills and knowledge to guide others through their learning process with constructive and accurate feedback. Assessing is an ever-growing field and this qualification is likely to open up several employment opportunities.
It provides one third of the qualifications to run your own training centre and teach on the courses yourself. This is known as the Teaching, Assessing & Quality Assurance (TAQA) pathway of qualifications.
