Option 1

Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET)

Ref: CDCET001
What is the course?
Formerly known as CTLLS, the Certificate in Education and Training (CET) is a step up from the Award in Education and Training (AET) and prepares you to teach in a wide range of contexts. As well as studying in the classroom or via distance learning, you’ll also be observed teaching.

We are offering CET with the following modules:

• Understanding Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training
(if you have already done AET, you may have already completed this module, in which case you will not need to repeat it)
• Assessing Learners in Education and Training
• Delivering Education and Training

• Planning to Meet the Needs of Learners in Education and Training
• Using Resources in Education and Training
• Inclusive Practice

Who is it for?
It’s for teachers or trainee teachers who have ideally already completed the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) or PTLLS and wish to progress to the next stage of their training. If you haven't already done AET but want to jump straight to CET, talk to us and we can discuss your options.

Do I need to be in a teaching role?
You will need to have enough teaching to record that you have done 30 hours throughout the course. But teaching can mean a variety of things! Your teaching hours can include one-to-one work, group work, voluntary or paid work. If you're not currently teaching, the Level 3 Award in Education and Training may be the course for you.

What about the observations?
You will need to be observed by your tutor on a minimum of three occasions for a minimum of half an hour each time. You’ll be observed throughout the course and receive full feedback so that you can do more of what’s working and less of what isn’t. Yes – it is nerve wracking but no worse than the microteach you completed for AET!
If you are studying via distance learning, you can either send in a video of you carrying out your observations or you can arrange a Skype/Facetime/Zoom call with your tutor who will observe you that way.

How much time will it take?
If you're choosing classroom learning, you can study over six months to one year. You’ll attend four to five full-day sessions, then work will be set for you to do in your own time. There are lots of options available for how the course can run and we would discuss your individual requirements before you sign up. The idea is that you attend and learn in a way that suits you.

Distance learners can move through as quickly as they choose.
You have up to 12 months to complete your coursework.

Are there any exams?
No. Your work isn’t graded either: you either pass or you are referred, which means you have an opportunity to resubmit your work. You’ll receive as much support as you need to pass! Your work will be assessed by your tutor.

Who is my tutor?
The tutor worked at YMCA for nine years, qualified with the Diploma To Teach In The Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) in 2011 and has been writing and delivering training for a variety of delegates for over ten years. She has worked in a mainstream school, has lots of experience in Alternative Education and now runs a Training Provider with her business partner.

want a qualification which focuses on practical teaching;
are currently teaching and want to have their experience and practice accredited;
are able to undertake a qualification of medium size;
have the potential to study at this level, which has the same level of demand as the first year of an undergraduate degree;
The online CET means that you can start at any time, and access the course materials and assessments at times to suit you. Most students complete the CET within 3 months.

Students are required to complete 6 units that focus on the planning, delivering, and assessing of learners, as well as using resources effectively, and teaching in a specialist area. All course materials are provided online, so there are no additional costs.

Students must be aged 19 and over, and should already be in a teaching position – you need to produce evidence of 30 hours of teaching practice (including 3 hours of observations) that need to be logged and signed off by your line manager.

Teaching Practice and Observations
You will need to produce evidence of 30 hours of teaching practice which will include 3 observations adding up to 3 hours.

The 3 observations required for the Certificate in Education are an assessment of the materials you create, your interactions with your learners and the professional discussions that occur between you the candidate and the assessor.

The teaching hours can be completed anywhere but must be carried out by a qualified teacher, and evidence of development needs to be provided over a period of time.

Remote observations are possible by virtual means i.e via webcam, however video evidence is not accepted, it must be live. You will need to explain why a direct observation was not possible.
